One of the things I enjoy most about attending vendor events is meeting fellow small business owners. There’s something special about seeing local makers share their talents, whether they’re crafting candles, woodworking, baking, sewing, or creating handmade bath products.

Whenever possible, I encourage people to shop local and support the small businesses in their own communities. Local businesses help our towns thrive, support local families, and offer products made with care and attention to detail.

But sometimes a person’s needs require them to look beyond their local area.

That is especially true for individuals and families living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome.

Here in the Ozarks and throughout much of the Midwest and East Coast, Alpha-Gal has become increasingly common. Many people know someone who has been affected by this tick-borne allergy, or they may be living with it themselves.

As I began building Country Bathworks, I spent a great deal of time researching ingredients and learning more about the concerns of those with Alpha-Gal. While many soap makers use goat milk, tallow, lard, or other mammal-derived ingredients in their products, I realized there was an opportunity to create something different.

After careful consideration, I made the decision to focus exclusively on oat milk or no milk soaps.

Oat milk provides a creamy, luxurious feel while allowing me to avoid the mammal-derived ingredients that may concern some individuals living with Alpha-Gal Syndrome.

For me, this decision became personal.

Like many families in our region, my own family has been affected by Alpha-Gal. Seeing firsthand how carefully ingredient labels must be read gave me a greater appreciation for the challenges many people face every day.

That experience reinforced my commitment to creating products with transparency and care.

While I always encourage customers to support their local soap makers whenever possible, I also understand that those living with Alpha-Gal may have a harder time finding products that align with their preferences and comfort level.
